Neighboring Church Donates Clothing for Students

Pastor Tyler St. Clair and Cornerstone Church kindly donated more than 150 pieces of clothing for students.

Thanks to a surprise donation from Cornerstone Church Detroit, Old Redford Academy Elementary School received more than 150 pieces of clothing for students in need.

“It means so much because we have families who are returning from the [COVID-19] pandemic truly in need,” said ORA Elementary Principal Tomeka Dixon. “To have such a random show of support is very touching and I know our parents and students appreciate it.”

Since moving the church next door to ORA elementary in August 2020, Cornerstone founder Pastor Tyler St. Clair said he has committed to doing whatever he can to give back to ORA students. In addition to this donation, ORA has hosted school events and other programs on Cornerstone grounds.

“We are always looking for tangible ways to serve and partner with our community,” said St. Clair. “Some say it’s cliche, but the children really are our future. We want to invest any way we can.”

The clothing will be distributed to students by the ORA Elementary Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO), led by first grade instructor Sonja Roundtree. Roundtree, who has been with ORA for six years, has run the PTSO since 2018. She said it is her hope that this act of kindness will rejuvenate the PTSO after a long COVID layover.

“I think this donation will have a huge impact on our students in need,” she said. “This is a great chance to think about what to do for our students next.”
