Curriculum

CKLA uses a knowledge-based schooling approach that has an emphasis on teaching and learning and enabling core broadly shared knowledge. The Core Knowledge Sequence represents an effort to identify and describe the specific core of shared knowledge that all children should learn. The Sequence is intended to help children establish strong foundations of knowledge grade by grade.

Students in grades 6-8 will be working with the newly adopted Eureka Math2. The program includes opportunities for students to engage in peer-to-peer discussion, proven to solidify understanding of math concepts.

McGraw Hill Inspire Science Inspire Science provides students investigate, problemsolve, argue, and discuss scientific phenomena to make sense of the world from their perspective. Inspire Science is organized around the 5E Instructional Framework (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and, Evaluate).

McGraw Hill IMPACT Social Studies, uses the 3 C framework (Engage, Investigate, and Report and Take Action). Students engage in learning activities that will model how to analyze sources and consider multiple perspectives as they think critically about problems, events, places, and people.

The EL Education Language Arts curriculum is a comprehensive standards-based program that is based on college and career readiness standards. The EL engages students through real-world content. The curriculum is designed on a three- dimensional view of student achievement (mastery of knowledge and skills, character, and high-quality work). The EL curriculum has a foundational focus on equity for all learners and uses the backward design planning and implementation.

STEMscopes Science is a comprehensive STEM curriculum that is adaptable and supports instruction in any kind of learning environment. The curriculum is designed around a 5E lesson model (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate) with Intervention and acceleration components to ensure support for students on various levels.

Oakland Schools Curriculum MC3 provides a model curriculum with instructional materials for our middle school students aligned to Michigan standards for social studies and content literacy. The curriculum is grounded in research and outlines best practices in social studies education.

In addition to the core curricular classes, students in our Middle School are offered physical education, computers, music, and art.

The Ninth Grade Academy is is an "academy-within-an- academy, "developed around the concept of a small learning community. Our mission is to ensure incoming freshmen make a smooth transition and meet new, rigorous high school standards. Providing programs and support to address the unique needs of entering freshmen results in increased student achievement.

Ninth graders are connected to a team of caring staff to address students' needs more personally. Teachers work in a collaborative environment and are committed to student learning.

Engage New York (Engage NY) is a curriculum that is aligned to the CCSS, contains text that is appropriately rigorous and allows teachers flexibility in presentation.

Engage New York (Engage NY/Eureka Math Curriculum modules provide in-depth focus on fewer topics. They integrate the CCSS, rigorous classroom reasoning, extended classroom time devoted to practice and reflection, and high expectations for mastery. The New York State Education Department contracted with Eureka Math in 2012 to create a mathematics curriculum called Engage NY, now known as Eureka Math. Algebra 1 students will be working with the newly adopted Eureka Math2.

The curriculum is grounded in research and outlines best practices in social studies education.

High schools have adopted various strategies designed to keep students that are at risk of not graduating in school and on track to graduate. Credit recovery encourages atrisk students to retake a previously failed course required for high school graduation and earn credit if the student successfully completes the course requirements (U.S. Department of Education 2015b). Credit recovery courses at the high school are available online using Edgenuity. Edgenuity Courseware provides students with flexible digital content and a curriculum that engages them to take ownership of their learning. The platform is available to students 24 hours each day. The High offers credit recovery classes as a part of students’ schedules after school with Saturday School options.
